______
A new profession. A different approach to hospitality.
Explore the philosophy, principles, standards, and vision behind Professional Social Hosting and the organization developing it.
Professional Social Host is the organization that created and developed Professional Social Hosting as a distinct profession and emerging sector of the hospitality industry.
PSH is the educational and professional association behind the profession. We develop people who naturally possess hospitable, soft, social skills and give them a pathway to develop, refine, and professionalize those abilities.
PSH develops and certifies Professional Social Hosts through education, professional standards, Hostmanship principles, Experience Design methodology, and a defined professional framework.
Creating a Professional Lane
People have been providing pieces of professional social hospitality for generations, often through other roles.
Personal assistants, household staff, event professionals, wellness professionals, social entertainers, and others have all been asked to provide social support, presence, hospitality, and shared experiences as part of what they do.
PSH created a professional lane specifically for that work.
Professional Social Hosting gives these functions a defined profession, professional standards, education, certification, and a clear service category.
What PSH Stands For
PSH believes human interaction is fundamental to human wellbeing and the health of society.
Meaningful human interaction contributes to our social, mental, emotional, spiritual, and psychological wellbeing. Hospitality is one of the most beautiful professional expressions of that belief because it creates space for people to be welcomed, received, cared for, and genuinely engaged.
PSH exists to help make that kind of human interaction accessible through a professional service.
Our vision is for professional social hospitality to become a mainstream service that people naturally consider when they have social needs.
At its core, PSH is professionalizing something people have needed and informally accessed for generations.
Hospitality is not simply what PSH does. It is how PSH expresses what it believes about people.
“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”
— Hebrews 13:2
1. The Professional Role
The Professional Social Host is an independent social hospitality service provider whose focus is the client. They receive what the client is looking for, create and curate an experience specifically tailored to the client, and deliver it through professionalism, Hostmanship, client centered hospitality, and care.
2. Social Hospitality as a Service
The Professional Social Host provides social engagement, hospitality, attention, presence, and professional support. Their role is to create and facilitate a social experience specifically for the client and ensure that the experience goes smoothly.
3. The Foundation of the Host
A Professional Social Host begins with a natural inclination toward hospitality and strong social skills. PSH develops and refines those qualities into professional capabilities, standards, and a service worthy of the title Professional Social Host.
4. The Professional Relationship
The Professional Social Host is not the client's friend. Friendship is mutual. Friends have their own needs, opinions, expectations, histories, and emotions. The Professional Social Host has a professional responsibility to the client and the experience.
5. The Freedom Created by Professionalism
The professional relationship gives the client freedom. They do not have to impress the host, entertain the host, or manage the host. They are able to express themselves and be themselves without the same relationship consequences that can come with someone they know personally.
6. Human Warmth Within Professional Boundaries
The relationship is professional, confidential, warm, and human. The host is there to provide genuine hospitality and human presence while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
7. Confidentiality, Discretion, and Privacy
The client's privacy extends beyond the hosting itself. Professional Social Hosts are expected to protect the confidentiality of the professional relationship, handle personal information discreetly, and respect the client's privacy in public and private settings. If a host encounters a past client in public, they do not approach or acknowledge the client unless the client initiates the interaction.
8. Neutrality and Client Focus
The host is neutral in their personal opinions and does not impose personal judgment on the client or their choices. Their responsibility is to execute what the client has requested and paid for, within reason.
9. Representing the Client
The host represents the client in interactions before, during, and after the experience. When communicating with venues and businesses, planning details, making arrangements, or handling follow through, the host understands that they are representing the client.
10. Anticipation and Care
The host anticipates what the client may need, remains mindful of their surroundings, considers specific client requirements, and prepares for potential issues whenever possible. This can include mobility access, food considerations, preferences, and other individual needs.
11. Professional Presentation
The host is polished, clean, appropriately dressed for the setting, respectful, communicative, and knowledgeable about etiquette. The client should feel confident that their host will conduct themselves in a way that reflects well on them.
12. The Host's Responsibility
The host's responsibility is the client. They do their best to accommodate the client's requests and needs within reason and ensure that the experience is handled professionally from beginning to end.
13. More Than Simply Providing Company
A Professional Social Host is trained and developed to provide intentional social hospitality. The role is not simply to be present. It is to host, facilitate, anticipate, represent, and create a smooth professional social experience for the client.
Professional Social Hosting creates customized, curated, or bespoke experiences specifically for the individual client.
This is Experience Design.
1. Discovery
The client shares what they enjoy, what interests them, what they value, what they would like to experience, what they want to feel, and what kind of time they want to have. Those details become the foundation for the experience.
2. Interpretation
The host takes what they have learned about the client and determines what would be best suited to them.
3. Creation
The host transforms the client's innermost wants, preferences, personality, and desires into a unique social experience. This goes beyond selecting venues or activities. It considers the entire fabric and feeling of the experience, including what the client sees, does, tastes, smells, feels, and remembers.
4. Curation
PSH reviews the host's creation and refines, polishes, and upgrades it to ensure the experience reflects the client and meets the professional standard.
5. Logistics
The host brings the experience to life by coordinating and managing reservations, tickets, seating, transportation, accessibility, timing, and every other necessary detail.
6. Hosting
The host arrives prepared and facilitates the experience from beginning to end, anticipating needs and handling details or unexpected issues so the client can remain immersed in their experience.
7. Follow Through
After the experience, the host follows up with the client after they have had time to reflect, creating space for continued professional connection.
Experience Design is similar to working with a travel advisor. The advisor learns the traveler and creates an itinerary specifically for them. Professional Social Hosting applies that same principle to local social experiences, with the professional there to guide and provide exceptional Hostmanship and hospitality throughout.
No two clients are the same. No two experiences are the same.
Social Self Care is intentionally making time for restorative conversation, human interaction, shared experiences, enjoyment, and connection without having to socially reciprocate.
It is giving the social side of life the same intentional consideration people give other forms of self care.
We often think of self-care as something we do alone: getting our hair done, geting a massage, enjoying a nice meal, or simply taking time away from our responsibilities. But humans also need connection, conversation, laughter, shared experiences, and the feeling of being around someone, but without any expectations.
Social self-care brings those two needs together.
It gives our clients an opportunity to get out, socialize, experience something enjoyable, and spend intentional time doing something nice for themselves, with the experience centered entirely around them. It gives clients the opportunity to intentionally choose how they want to spend their social time.
And there is an important difference.
With PSH, there is no reciprocation or expectations.
Think about it like this: When you get your hair cut, do you have to cut the barber's hair in return? When you get a massage, are you expected to massage the therapist? No. And the same goes for PSH...
Clients don't have to worry about a host's emotional needs, wants, opinions, judgments, or expectations. They don't have to manage the interaction around what someone else needs from them. They don't have to give something back simply because someone is giving something to them.
They get to receive.
The Professional Social Host is there to facilitate the social aspect of the experience and to provide restorative conversation, engagement, presence, and hospitality while clients simply are themselves and enjoy their time.
That is what makes social self-care different: social connection without the obligation of social reciprocity.
What Is Hostmanship
Hostmanship is the practice of making another person feel welcomed, seen, considered, comfortable, and genuinely cared for through intentional attention.
What Hostmanship Feels Like
Hostmanship is the feeling that someone is genuinely there to make sure you are taken care of.
It is where good service meets intentional personal care. You walk away feeling, “They really listened to me. They took care of me. They heard what I said. They did the thing.”
Making People Feel Seen and Heard
Hostmanship makes people feel welcomed, heard, seen, and considered. It creates the feeling that the things that matter to you matter to the person serving you.
Notice. Listen. Remember. Respond.
Notice the details.
Listen to what the client says and what matters to them.
Remember the details that make them unique.
Respond in ways that make the experience better.
Listening Beyond Words
Hosts pay attention not only to what clients say, but to what may be communicated indirectly through tone, behavior, preferences, and context. They listen between the lines and remain attentive to needs that may not be directly expressed.
Turning Attention Into Action
Hostmanship means turning what the host notices and understands into meaningful service.
The Response to a Request
“No” is never the first response. The host looks for what can be done.
“Let me work this out.”
“Let me figure this out.”
“Let me see what I can do.”
The host shows effort, care, and a willingness to try.
Anticipation
The host looks ahead for what the client may need and takes action whenever possible before the client has to ask.
Effort and Care
The client should be able to see and feel that the host is making an intentional effort on their behalf.
Going Beyond Ordinary Service
Hostmanship goes beyond simply fulfilling a request. It is the pursuit of an experience where the client feels genuinely taken care of.
Unreasonable Hospitality
PSH encourages hosts to aim beyond the expected standard of service and provide exceptional hospitality whenever reasonably possible.
The Result
The client walks away feeling:
They get me.
They see me.
They hear me.
They took care of me.
The Core Principle
Great hosting is more than being present.
It is knowing how to be present for someone.
Professional Social Hosting Is Built on Trust
Confidentiality and Discretion Are Foundational
PSH considers confidentiality and discretion fundamental to professional social hospitality because the service is deeply personal.
A Safe Space Requires Privacy
Clients should be able to speak openly, be themselves, and participate without worrying that their conversations, choices, whereabouts, or personal information will become public knowledge.
Professional Presence
Preparedness, punctuality, presentation, communication, and conduct.
Discretion
Respect for the client's privacy, personal information, conversations, and experience.
Professional Boundaries
A clear understanding of the distinction between professional social engagement and personal relationships.
Reliability
Following through and handling every part of the experience responsibly.
Respect
Respect for the client's time, opinions, preferences, comfort, individuality, and dignity.
The Professional Standard
Hosts are legally obligated through their PSH agreements to protect client information. Clients also agree to confidentiality terms through the client waiver.
Information Stays Within PSH
Client information is shared only with people who need it for the client's experience.
Professional Boundaries Continue Beyond the Hosting
Discretion applies during and after the hosting, including encounters in public. A host does not approach or acknowledge a past client unless the client initiates. The host only sends follow-up communications as agreed.
The PSH Position
The client should never have to wonder whether something they said, did, or expressed will later be exposed, shared, or used against them.
The Connection to Social Self Care
Confidentiality creates the freedom necessary to make Social Self Care possible.
Professionalism provides the structure.
Hospitality provides the warmth.
Discretion provides the trust.
Because...
1. The Need Already Existed
People have always needed human attention, social engagement, hospitality, conversation, and shared experiences.
2. The Function Already Existed
Personal assistants, butlers, household staff, governesses, event professionals, wellness professionals, social entertainers, and others have historically provided pieces of social hospitality.
3. The Profession Did Not
These functions existed across different roles, but there was no clearly defined professional role specifically dedicated to social hospitality.
4. Other Cultures Recognized the Need
Japan provides examples of professionalized social interaction being offered for different personal and social needs.
5. Self Neglect
Most people spend their lives doing and giving. They are working, managing, caring for others, meeting responsibilities, solving problems, and constantly responding to what someone else needs. Social self-care through Professional Social Hospitality is our answer to self neglect.
6. Society Changed
The pandemic disrupted social habits and communities, while an increasingly digital world has changed how people interact with one another.
7. The Need Became More Visible
As society changed, we believe the need for more intentional human interaction became increasingly apparent.
8. The Vision Is Bigger Than a Service
Professional Social Hosting is intended to become a mainstream service that people naturally consider when they have social needs.
The need is not new. The profession is.
Professional Social Hosting brings together Social Self Care, Client Centered Hospitality, Experience Design, Hostmanship, professionalism, and discretion.
Together, these principles establish a different approach to social engagement.
People Deserve to Feel Seen
We believe people deserve to feel safe, heard, seen, acknowledged, and free to express who they truly are.
When people spend most of their lives giving, serving, caring for others, and managing responsibilities, they can lose touch with themselves. They can forget what they value, what they enjoy, and who they are beyond what they do for everyone else.
PSH creates space for a person to reconnect with themselves.
The Value of Receiving
There is profound value in being cared for without having to earn that care through reciprocity. When people have space to receive, they can restore themselves, replenish their sense of well-being, and return to the world with more of themselves available to give from a full replenished space.
Hospitality Can Restore
Hospitality can do more than make someone feel welcome. When someone pays attention, remembers what matters, listens, and acts on what they hear, it can restore a person's sense of value and remind them of who they are.
Sometimes a client may mention something important almost in passing. A Professional Social Host notices it, remembers it, and brings it to life. What was once a passing thought can become something the client realizes still matters deeply to them.
The Relationship With Self
We want people to leave a PSH experience feeling more connected to themselves, with a greater sense of identity, security, value, clarity, peace, joy, and happiness within themselves.
We want people to remember that they are important. That they are valuable. That they are unique.
The Value of Human Attention
PSH believes human attention, emotional labor, consideration, and care have tremendous value. A service does not have to involve completing a task to be valuable.
There is value in listening. There is value in presence. There is value in helping another person enjoy their life, express themselves, and feel like themselves again.
A New Understanding of Social Care
PSH believes professional social interaction deserves its own place within society. It does not have to be therapy. It does not have to be wellness. It does not have to be romance.
It can simply be Social Self Care.
A professional human interaction service created to help people reconnect with themselves, enjoy their lives, and experience the value of being genuinely seen, heard, and cared for.
Most experiences are designed for an occasion.
Professional Social Hosting is designed for the person.
The occasion is the client.
The experience is tailored to them.
The host makes it social.
PSH makes it professional.
